These relationships take a variety of forms, including workshops, study groups, conferences, visiting lecturers, mailing and publication projects. The Center accommodates foreign and Russian researchers collaborating with Washington staff on a variety of topical areas and policy-relevant projects. The CRDF supports exceptional peer-reviewed research projects that offer scientists and engineers alternatives to emigration. Projects: 1) help prevent the dissolution of the scientific and technological infrastructure of the countries of the FSU; 2) advance the transition of weapons scientists to civilian work by funding collaborative non-weapons research and development projects; 3) help move applied research to the marketplace; and, 4) bring economic benefits both to the countries of the FSU and to the United States. http://www.fordfound.org/ Ford Foundation The Foundation works with Russian organizations: 1) to strengthen democratic institutions and foster the development of civil society; 2) to promote equity and access to justice for all, with particular regard to the most disadvantaged groups within society; and, 3) to support higher education, scholarship and policy research, culture and media. The Foundation intends to strengthen democratic values, reduce poverty and injustice, promote international cooperation, and advance human achievement. www.hhmi.ru Howard Hughes Medical Institute The Howard Hughes Medical Institute promotes human knowledge and its effective application, principally within the the fields of medical research and medical education. A part of its International Program includes an initiative for scientists in Belarus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuhania, Poland, Russia, Slovak Republic, and Ukraine. MacArthur Foundation The Foundation is a private, independent grantmaking institution supporting research, policy development, dissemination, education and training, and practice. It works for the development of healthy individuals and effective communities; peace within and among nations; responsible choices about human reproduction; and a global ecosystem capable of supporting healthy human societies. The Foundation's Global Security and Sustainability Program focuses on international peace and security, ecosystems conservation and policy, population, and on cross-cutting themes that include human rights, international justice, and new governance arrangements to address the consequences of globalization. wwics.si.edu/kennan/index.htm Kennan Institute for Advanced Russian Studies The Kennan Institute provides a forum for bringing historical depth on and contemporary understanding of Russia and the former Soviet Union to the nation's capital. The Institute organizes seminars, workshops, briefings, and conferences featuring prominent scholars and policymakers from America, Russia, and other successor states to the Soviet Union with experience in shaping US-Russian policy. The Institute awards scholarships to researchers from the Newly Independent States (NIS) of the former Soviet Union to conduct research in Washington, D.C. In addition, it offers a variety of grants to US-based scholars pursuing topics in the Russian/NIS field. The Institute has representative offices in Moscow and Kyiv. www.nceeer.org National Council for Eurasian and East European Research The US NCEEER develops and sustains long-term, high quality programs of post-doctoral research in the social, political, economic, and historical development of Russia, Eurasia, and East Europe. Research grants and contracts analyze current developments and their significance for the future. The Council makes its network of American institutions and scholars available to specialists from the region pursuing training in the social sciences and humanities fields directly related to reform. Council programs include Collaborative Research Programs, Individual Research Programs, Policy Research Fellowships, a Regional Scholars Program, a Junior Faculty Development Program, and Research Competitions. www.osi.ru Open Society Institute (OSI), Russia OSI-Russia is a member of the international network of the Soros Foundation. The Open Society Institute in Russia devises and carries out national programs including Culture, Education, Civil Society; Pushkin Library: Books for Russian Libraries; Internet Program; Public Health; Law and Management. The Central European University Program, the Management Training Program, the East-East Program, and the Soros Center for Contemporary Arts are initiated by the Institute's New York and Budapest offices. Other programs and organizations financed by George Soros operating in Russia include the International Soros Science Education Program (ISSEP: www.issep.rssi.ru); the International Center for Economic and Business Education (ICEBE); and the Moscow Higher School of Social and Economic Studies (Moscow School: www.msses.ru). www.projectharmony.org Project Harmony Project Harmony is a nonprofit cultural organization active in Ukraine and Russia. Its programs emphasize interactive projects, hands-on training and homestays in each country. Alton Jones Foundation The foundation's Sustainable World Program supports efforts to ensure that human activities do not erode the Earth's capacity to support life by focusing on four inter-related themes: a) maintaining biological diversity; b) creating economic incentives and policies that encourage environmentally sound development; c) developing energy resources that protect the climate; and, d) avoiding contamination that undermines children's health. Special funds are set aside to support grassroots efforts of organizations working from local to statewide levels, including programs funded within the countries of the former Soviet Union. Within each of these issues, the foundation funds work on a restricted set of program initiatives. |
