Milestone Achievement in USAID-St. Petersburg Partnership on HIV/AIDS

The St. Petersburg City Committee on Social Policy organized a conference at Smolny City Hall on September 30, 2009 to present a new policy document on social services for HIV-positive mothers that was developed by the Committee in collaboration with experts from two USAID partners: the University Research Co. and HealthRight International. This was a key result of a multi-faceted partnership program between USAID/Russia and the St. Petersburg City Administration that was launched in July 2007. The conference was attended by over 100 high-level representatives of committees on health care and social policy, health and social care institutions, the City AIDS Center, USAID and the U.S. Consulate General in St. Petersburg. In his opening remarks, Acting USAID/Russia Mission Director Jonathan Kamin noted that the “prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV is one of Russia’s major successes in the fight against HIV/AIDS.” Many of the Russian officials praised U.S.-Russian cooperation on this issue and Dr. Larisa Dementieva, the Deputy Head of the HIV/AIDS Department at Rospotrebnadzor, emphasized that the partnership between USAID and St. Petersburg has contributed significantly to the successful implementation of the National Priority Project on Health.
