On April 26, the independent Russian election monitoring association Golos celebrated its 10th anniversary with a presentation of its work and achievements. In its first decade, Golos has successfully monitored three federal and over 100 regional electoral campaigns in 50 different Russian regions. Golos also trained more than 25,000 election observers and participated in 15 OSCE observation missions abroad. At the anniversary event, USAID Acting Mission Director Desaix Myers presented Golos with an official congratulatory letter from Ambassador Beyrle, and Golos awarded three Russian citizens with "Defender of Free Elections" medals for helping protect voter rights during the March 2010 elections. Founded in April 2000, with support from USAID and the National Democratic Institute, Golos remains the only Russian organization that specializes in independent monitoring of elections. During the past two years, it has diversified its activities by introducing issue-based advocacy campaigns in some regions. The most successful regional campaigns introduced by Golos include "Transparent Budget," which advocates for public monitoring of regional budgets, and "Active Citizens, Transparent Authorities," which promotes public monitoring of the work of deputies.
