The program works through partnerships, which transfer knowledge, skills and technology between Canadian organizations and those in the recipient country. The program also aims to improve the safety of Soviet-designed nuclear power stations. The project is being carried out by the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC), working in conjunction with experts in academia, government and the non-governmental sector in both Canada and the Russian Federation. www.aucc.ca/en/programs/dcmrp.html Democratic Civil-Military Relations Program (DCMRP) DCMRP promotes the democratization of defense policy and the establishment of strategic defense communities in 12 countries in Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. This is achieved by educating senior civilian and military staff of government ministries in those countries, such as the ministries of defense and foreign affairs, in the history and practice of civil-military relations in Canada. By involving Canadian universities, the public and private sectors, and nongovernmental organizations, the program supports the Canadian democratic strategic community, whereby both civilian and military expertise are promoted and integrated within the policy-making process. The program is administered on behalf of Canada's Department of National Defense by the Association of Universaries and Colleges of Canada. www.carleton.ca/eurus/east-west.html East-West Project The Project involves a three-year program of training Russian social scientists, designed to strengthen the human resource base and institutional capacity of Russian social science research. The Project's faculty associates are also working on a research project, "Russia's Move to the Market: The Human Factor in the Workplace," in order to learn about the effects of privatization on labour, management, and trade unions in Russian industrial enterprises, with a focus on enterprises jointly owned and managed with foreign partners. The Project is funded by the Assistance Bureau for Central and Eastern Europe of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (Canada). www.carleton.ca/eurus/eastwest/capbuild.html Capacity Building in Public Policy in Russia The project supports the process of democratic development in Russia by strengthening the institutional capacity of social science research and consulting organizations. It provides training to Russian social scientists who work in a variety of public organizations throughout Russia and who have practical experience in the field of social research. Participants are given the opportunity to improve their skills and knowledge in assessing public needs and policies through survey research. Training participants are required to use these skills by carrying out research projects in their field of interest.
